We do not endorse or recommend any particular brand, but the listed ones have well-earned reputations in the market. Feel free to explore any brands of your choice with similar configurations.
The author has 20+ years of experience with teaching design software across disciplines in top design colleges in India. He is an interdisciplinary designer specializing in user interaction design and product design.
Note: We do not advise choosing MacBooks due to potential compatibility issues, but this is a personal decision. Those who wish to buy MacBooks should ensure compatibility with the software taught in their domain. Refer to the first comment for general consideration while deciding for a laptop.
GENERAL INFORMATION
When buying a new laptop, it’s essential to prioritize four main components to ensure the best performance for your design needs:
Processor: Both Intel and AMD produce top-tier microprocessors. Intel, with its long-standing reputation, has consistently introduced groundbreaking technologies. However, AMD has recently challenged Intel’s dominance, particularly with its Ryzen 7000 and later processors, which offer excellent cost-to-value performance and have outperformed Intel’s 13th generation processors in many benchmarks. Both brands are excellent choices, depending on your budget and preferences.
Graphics Card: The most crucial component for a design laptop is the GPU. Almost every design discipline requires significant graphic processing power due to the use of various 2D and 3D software. NVIDIA leads the market with its superior GPUs and software support. While Intel and AMD are making strides with their Iris XE (Intel) and Radeon (AMD) series, they are not yet on par with NVIDIA. For smooth performance, a design laptop should feature at least a RTX 3050 or higher. Depending on your needs, the RTX 4060 series is also a good option.
RAM: The manufacturer of RAM is less critical as the quality is generally consistent across brands. RAM is vital for loading system files and ensuring that running programs have quick access to resources. While 16 GB is the minimum requirement, it’s advisable upgrading the RAM later, as most laptops support up to 32 GB in two slots.
Storage (SSD): Previously, HDDs were valued for their data capacity, but SSDs have revolutionized system performance. SSDs enhance system speed, save battery life, and reduce noise and heat. It’s best to choose a laptop with only SSD storage. While an HDD + SSD combo is an option, it doesn’t provide the same benefits as a pure SSD setup. If you need more storage, consider cloud storage or an external SSD. For those who game frequently and stream, a minimum of 1TB SSD is recommended.
i have chosen animation and game design course but im also interested in editing and also want to learn cgi and room to explore more, im looking for a very high powered laptop for multitasking, budget is not a huge issue would you recommend ,ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 (2022) or ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2024) (both are under 3l) or others what would you recommend? performance and longivity are preferred
I would not going to such high priced laptops. For now consider below options. Later you should invest in desktop system for best value of money and power needed for your requirements.
1. https://amzn.to/4eGu9Pv
2. https://amzn.to/4eIKd34
For animation and game design what do we opt for? Isnt a MacBook more suited?
Specially for Animation and game design Mac would not be preferred due to many software compatibility issues.
The M3 chip integrated within the Mac demonstrates remarkable capabilities, delivering efficient performance and extending battery life up to an impressive 18 hours. However, it presents a limitation in terms of software availability compared to Windows, as users are unable to obtain pirated software without incurring financial consequences. In contrast, Windows offers the flexibility of free downloads through third-party websites.
Correct. Also to keep in mind, even for some paid software support is limited.
Good morning sir
I had a query regarding the hardware required for a UID student.
What would the mac IOS recommendation for the same requirements be? Or is only Android specifically recommended?
Please Do let me know. Thank you
I would not recommend a mac due to software compatibility issues. we have not recommended android (mobile OS) either. The laptops suggested have Windows OS.
What if I wanna get a mac instead of windows what model is recommended
It a personal choice however i would not advice buying a mac if you are starting your journey as a design student.
can you please suggest any Asus / HP model with intel processor for product design. Or do you suggest AMD ryzen
Both are fine. However Ryzen (AMD) 7000 series is better compared to I7 in terms of multitasking and energy efficiency. you may consider any of the two below :
1. https://amzn.to/4b45elK
2. https://amzn.to/3RsSZbs
i wouldn’t recommend going for 14th gen for now since its new and flagship cost is extra. however if budget is not a constraint consider below:

Hi sir, I’m a fashion designing student , i already have a macbook….is it possible to work on that?
Yes for fashion design it is fine. However to explore advanced software for pattern making and 3D simulations later you may consider switching to better windows PC.
hello.
I already have a Mac. is there any way to go about it?
what are the software and hardware requirements for Mac?
You can definitely work on Mac! Let me know about you department to help you further with your software requirement.
Its product design sir
I wouldn’t recommend Mac for product design. You would be working on a lot of high end 3D software which would not support Mac. Please consider a good windows laptop.
could I use Mac for the first year ??
I have a laptop that is an HP Pavilion x360 convertible. it has an Intel generation 11 processor with i5 and sdd.will that be sufficient?
Initially it would work fine. But as the semester progress (Most likely from 2nd year onwards) you would require more compute power and can switch to a new laptop.
hi, would an ASUS laptop be okay for interior design?
Its not about the brand but the configuration. Please share exact config
I have a laptop that is HP ENVY x360 convertible with Processor AMD Ryzen 5 4500 with Radeon Graphics and RAM 8GB. Will it be okay to use this?
You can use this for first 6 months but post that consider switching to a better laptop based on your design discipline.
Can you please confirm if the given configuration is ok.. This is of Acer Brand
Processor : Intel core i7-13620H
LCD : 15.6″ FHD IPS 144Hz SlimBezel
Graphics : NVIDIA® GeForce RTXT™ 4050 with 6 GB SDDR6 Dedicated VRAM
Memory : 16 GB DDR5 Memory
Storage : 1024GB PCle NVMe SSD
Acer Nitro V 15
ANV15-51-74QV
This is fine however if you are from product, visual communication, animation dept go for RTX 4060
Can you please tell best laptops for animation and game design.
if budget is good : https://amzn.to/3UQcviX
otherwise : https://amzn.to/3UQbTd9 or https://amzn.to/3K9Okam as per brand preference
I have Asus i3, 7thGen, MODEL- X507UA.
do you think this will work if I update it ti neccesory requirement or not. (if yes then what all upgrades are required?).
You shall consider upgrading since all the design related work require min I5 or Ryzen 5 config.
Can I use it for 1st year? Or I should consider upgrading before?
I will be pursuing product designing. Am i required to have the i7 processor with all the other features mentioned in my foundation year as i have just purchased a laptop ( HP i5 ). is it possible i can purchase it later within my second year?
Yes for the first year it ok to work with the laptop your have if you have just purchased it.
I have opted interior and furniture design and already own macbook air .are all the softwares compatible with this laptop?
If you already own macbook then you may use it for first year
Hi,
We have recently purchased
Apple 2020 MacBook Pro (13.3-inch/33.78 cm, M1 chip with 8‑core CPU and 8‑core GPU, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD).
I am getting into Interior design .
Hope this works.
You can use it for first year and then see for yourself it that works.
I ve existing Apple 2020 MacBook Pro (13.3-inch/33.78 cm, M1 chip with 8‑core CPU and 8‑core GPU, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD). I will be joining UID in Interior design stream, plz advise if this works.
I have opted for Interaction Design and am considering a MacBook M2. Is this suitable for the course? Should I expect heavy workload tasks in the first couple of months, or can I use my current laptop until I get a new one at the end of August? My current laptop specs are:
10th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-10210U Processor (6MB Cache, up to 4.2 GHz)
8GB DDR4 RAM
512GB SSD storage
Thank you.
You can get a new suitable laptop after first semester as well. The one you have will serve you all right for the time.
Thanks for your prompt response.
Hello!! My daughter is planning to take up Visual Communicatio Design with UI & UX as her probable line of specialisation . The following specifications have been recommended by a retail store in our home town. Would request you to give your valuable advice in this regard before we buy any product.
Dell G15-5530
• i7-13th Generation (13650 HX)
• 16 GB DDR5 Ram
• 1TB Gen 4 SSD
• RTX 3050 6 GB Graphics
• Windows 11
• MS Office 2021
• 15.6” Full HD Display
Hi !
Since she will be perusing Visual Communication i would recommend going for RTX 4060 for GPU rather than 3050. Consider the models suggested in the blog post. I usually do not prefer Dell because of cost vs value proposition. but its a personal call. if you intend to go with Dell. you may consider below option
1. https://amzn.to/3KTx4qg
Hi. I have opted for product designing.
I have an iPad Pro. 4th generation.
The specifications are:
M2 chip
16 GB Ram
10 core GPU
1 Tb hard disk.
I was wondering if I could use that instead of a laptop since the specifications match the ones given.
Hi Aaryaa, I am sorry to say that a tablet alone would not suffice for your projects related to product design. You would be working on very high end software such as solid works, fusion 360, rhinoceros along with Adobe suite, etc. Please consider buying a good config laptop sooner.
Hello !
My daughter will be in product design and we have purchased asus ROG zephyrus G16 of i7 core it has all the specified specs given in the list but is not one of the suggestions in this list so is it a good laptop for product design will it perform well ??
Hi,
if this ( https://amzn.to/4cyryFc ) is the model you are talking about than its an excellent choice. I have not included it in the recommendation due to cost vs value proposition. We have to ensure that the hardware offer maximum performance in comparison to the money spent. You have got premium flagship product which will do the job.
Hello
This is sarvesh again thank you for clearing my doubt there is 1 more question i have placed the order but the laptop will be coming on 10th august which is 1 month after the college reopens will she be fine without any laptop for a month ?
It should not be a problem.
hello, i have a macbook air and my course is visual communication. should you suggest to get a new laptop?
For first year it will work fine, Your may decide later.
My daughter has taken product design. We are planning to buy a new laptop. Please suggest best models preferably HP/ Asus brand.
you can consider below options based on your budget.
1. https://amzn.to/45IwLs7 (check for back to school offer.)
2. https://amzn.to/4eHAWbI
In case budget in not a concern
1. https://amzn.to/4eGu9Pv
2. https://amzn.to/4eIKd34
hello. i have opted for visual communication and i have dell inspiron 7570.
Device name DESKTOP-4B9PTUD
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60GHz 1.80 GHz
Installed RAM 12.0 GB (11.8 GB usable) Windows 10
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
can i use this for the first semester?
Yes you can use it for the first semester !
Hi, I wanted to ask if I can use MacBook Pro if it has windows software installed?
It might not work since the hardware acceleration is from GPU and 3D software which utilizes the same directly communicates with GPU driver. I would advice to go with windows laptop or alternatively use Mac with IOS.
hey i opted communication which processor should i opt intel or amd ryzen
Hi, For communication design both the processors work fine. However if you intended to explore 3D software more than AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors will have an advantage over Intel 13th Gen HS series. In short i can tell you that INTEL is good for Linear workflows where you do not run a lot of multiple CPU intensive operations concurrently and AMD excels in multitasking and comparatively power efficient and cost effective. I would prefer AMD 7000 Series.
and what laptop is best for communication design
You can consider any of the below options :
1. https://amzn.to/3xHVct8
2. https://amzn.to/3LbELIw
3. https://amzn.to/4eOh3je
Hello, I have opted for interior and furniture design which laptop from the following will be better for me? MacBook Pro or Dell XPS or MSI Creator Z16 or HP envy 15?
Hi Disha, You shall consider buying a windows laptop since it will have better compatibility with many third party software you would require. You shall also consider below option from MSI (The creator series has RTX 3060 and over priced as well)
1. https://amzn.to/3XVMUIV
2. https://amzn.to/3RTDFVy (If HP is fine)
Are these options good for Communication Design? Please tell which one of them is good? These are suggested by a local shop.
ASUS TUF :I 7 13 gen 16 Gb Ram DDRS 512 SSD 8GB RTX 4060 WINDOWS 11 15.6 144 Hz DISPLAY
HP OMEN 16-WF0179TX : 13 GEN, I7 PRO, 16GB RAM DDR5, 512 SSD, RTX3050 6 GB GRAFICS, 165 Hz, 16.1 Inch, Windows 11.
HP OMENn 16-XD0020AX : RYZEN7840HS PRO 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, RTX 4060 8GB GRAFIC CARD, 165 Hz, 16.1 INCH, WINDOW 11.
Hello sir ,
I wanted to ask that all the configuration are met in MacBook as well but just the chip is different.
And also m3 chip is better than intel.
So can I buy MacBook ?
Hi Priyanka, Its not just about the hardware but the combination of OS as well. For product design you will be working on software such as solidworks which will not be compatible with MAC. Also many third party software will be an issue. However its still a personal choice to go with MAC.
If I want to buy MacBook which model would you suggest for product design. ?
Hi sir
For interior and furniture design is the following laptop ok for the price or is there any other better option.
https://amzn.in/d/0dPV9LSn
Thank you
